Best LiFePO4 Battery Banks

The definitive guide to drop-in lithium iron phosphate batteries for RV, van life, cabin, and home off-grid systems.

Why LiFePO4?

Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries are the best choice for off-grid and RV use for several reasons:

Longest Cycle Life

3,000–5,000+ full cycles vs 300–500 for AGM. That's 8–15 years of daily use.

Non-Combustible

LiFePO4 chemistry won't vent toxic gases or catch fire, unlike NMC or lead-acid.

High Discharge Rate

1C continuous discharge (100A from a 100Ah battery) – handles inverters and power tools.

Cold Weather Warning: LiFePO4 batteries must not be charged below 32°F (0°C). If you're in a cold climate, make sure your battery has one of these:
  • A BMS with a working low-temperature charge cutoff
  • A 12V self-heating pad attached to the battery
  • A battery with a built-in heater (like RELiON InSight)
Mount the BMS temperature sensor near the bottom of the battery bank – that's where it's coldest.

DIY Raw Cell Option

If you're comfortable with basic electronics, buying raw prismatic LiFePO4 cells from reputable suppliers (EVE, CATL, Lishen) and building your own battery pack can cost as low as $0.20–$0.25/Wh – a fraction of drop-in battery prices.

DIY requirements:
  • A quality BMS ($150+) from JK BMS, Overkill Solar, or Daly with proven low-temperature protection
  • Cell-level fusing (nickel or copper bus bars, fuse wire)
  • A cell balancer / top balancer to balance cells before first use
  • Basic understanding of parallel and series wiring
